It’s All His Anyway: 5 Principles of Biblical Stewardship

1.      Rulers of the Earth:  God has called man whom He created to have dominion over the earth.  He has called us to be His first-line managers. (Genesis 1:26-28)

2.      God’s Work First: I Haggai’s day Zerubbabel and the others were not taking care of God’s house and were failing to rebuild the temple.  They were taking care of their needs but not God’s.  God’s work must come before our own comfort. (Haggai 1:3-11)

3.      Robbing God and the Windows of Heaven: God expects us to faithfully return our tithes and offerings to Him.  It is not one or the other, He expects both.  We must be faithful in this or God’s hand of blessing will be kept from us.  If we are faithful He will pour out blessings from heaven so much we cannot receive it all.  (Malachi 3:8-12)

4.      Beyond Money: God is not only interested in us being good stewards of our money; He also wants us to manage our time well and to pause and worship Him on the Sabbath.  Time is perhaps the most valuable resource that we have.  Unlike money that can be replaced, time that is lost is gone forever. We should spend it dwelling on heavenly things. (Exodus 20:8-10; 31:17; Philippians 4:8)

5.      Talents on Loan from God: God has blessed us each with a special measure of talents.  These talents equip us to accomplish the tasks of life.  Along with these talents God gives us spiritual gifts once we come to Jesus.  It is this partnership with the Divine that equips us to spread the gospel. We must take up this work from God or the talents we have will be taken away. (Matthew 25:15; 1 Corinthians 12)
